Babacu Livre follows the story of a community of women from Lago de Junco province, Maranhao state, Northeastern Brazil who collect and break babacu nuts for a living. They call ths babacu palm 'The tree of life' as itn provides them with food, shelter and is their only source of income. They have been fighting for land rights against local ranchers for over twenty years, who threaten the women, burn down the trees and posion the soil. They have managed to form a cooperative that sells fairtrade babacu oil to The Body Shop among other international organisations, but their struggle continues.
Babacu Livre was screened on International Women's day in Rome 2011.
